“X-Ray Inspection Technology as the Key to Resilient, Sustainable Production for the Future – The Potential of Industrial Computer Tomography”
To an ever-greater extent, increasing product complexity, shorter innovation cycles and ever-stricter quality requirements are pushing traditional manufacturing approaches to their limits. In many cases, the zero-defects concept can no longer be fully implemented in a cost-effective manner.
Against this backdrop, industrial X-ray technology, in particular computer tomography (CT), is emerging as a strategic tool: it facilitates non-destructive, three-dimensional analysis of components and not only helps companies to check quality, but rather to manage it in a targeted fashion too.
The use of CT offers clear advantages – from reduced scrap rates and faster development processes to more stable, data-driven, optimised workflows and greater product reliability for complex components.
Especially in innovation-driven sectors such as battery cell manufacturing, this technology is already indispensable and will play a central role in resilient, sustainable, digital production systems in the future.

Sustainability through Quality: Miele’s Perspectives at the Control Expert Days
Guido Nilgen, Director Quality Management/Technology Center Drives bei Miele
Just how closely quality assurance, innovation and sustainable business practices are now linked is demonstrated by the example set by premium manufacturer Miele. Durable products, circular economy concepts and data-based quality strategies are at the heart of their holistic corporate approach.
Guido Nilgen, director of the Quality Management/Technology Centre for Drives at Miele, will share this perspective from a practical standpoint at the 2026 Control Expert Days. As an enthusiast for quality and sustainability at Miele, he advocates an approach that views quality not only as a technical discipline, but also as a key contributor to lasting value creation.
On the first day of the event, beginning at 3 p.m., he’ll discuss “Sustainability through Quality Assurance” at a panel discussion moderated by QZ editor-in-chief Wolfgang Kräusslich.
Guido Nilgen offers some initial insights in advance – three questions, three answers:
1. According to the 2025 Sustainability Report, Miele is synonymous with long-lasting quality, innovation and sustainable business practices – what does that mean to you as an enthusiast for quality and sustainability?
For me personally, it fulfils exactly what’s been motivating me for years. For me, durability isn’t just a technical promise, but rather an expression of respect for people and resources. Testing products for a service life of up to 20 years reflects a commitment to quality. The focus on sustainability has been rooted in Miele’s corporate history right from the very beginning … it’s part of our DNA.
For me, innovation is the second major building block: whether you’re talking about our refurbishment programme, which provides our washing machines with a new lease of life, or circular design as demonstrated by our VOOPER vacuum cleaner study. Examples like these illustrate how closely quality and sustainability are linked to each other.
Finally, for me, sustainable business practices mean taking our “Always Better” motto seriously – not as a quest for perfection, but as a shared journey. All in all, this means that I can follow my passion – creating quality that truly makes a difference.
2. “Sustainability through Quality Assurance” will be the theme of the panel discussion at the 2026 Control Expert Days. Where does QA become a genuine driver of sustainable value creation in actual practice – is there another striking example from your company?
QA also becomes a real driver of sustainable value creation in everyday practice by means of predictive quality. With the help of AI, we’re now able to look into the future when analysing quality, process, and usage data. We’ve already implemented tangible use cases at Miele – on the shop floor in order to reduce scrap and rework, as well as in customer service to support troubleshooting and corrective action. However, our experience shows that it’s important for people, not machines, to make final decisions based on predictions.
3. The “Always Better” brand promise is also based on sustainable quality assurance – in your view, is this a key factor for long-term competitiveness?
For me, “Always Better” not only stands for durable and reliable products – it also describes the attitude of understanding quality as a contribution to sustainable business practices. Our customers have always associated Miele with both: premium quality and a sense of responsibility. And this is precisely why sustainable quality assurance is a key competitive factor. It promotes longevity, drives innovations such as predictive quality and second-life concepts, and it strengthens the trust our brand has enjoyed for decades. Taking a holistic approach to quality, and not just meeting but also exceeding customer requirements, ensures long-term relevance and success.
Top Technology Presentation plus Direct Communication with the Experts
The Control Expert Days on 20 and 21 May 2026 are evolving into an exclusive, highly efficient meeting place for experts. Just over three months in advance, the QA industry is looking forward to this two-day highlight featuring business, communication and the transfer of knowledge at the highest levels. The event combines the presentation of specialist information by means of talks, discussions and diverse networking opportunities with an exhibition of technical innovations. This year’s programme focuses on the topics of sustainability and AI.
The Control Expert Days are an add-on format for the Control international trade fair for quality assurance, which will be held once every two years in future. With the new, exclusive expert meet, which will also take place once every two years in alternation with the trade fair, industry players will have the opportunity of maintaining permanent annual presence in the field of quality assurance under the auspices of Control. “Our exhibitors are thus provided with maximum market penetration by utilising both formats,” explains Fabian Krüger, project manager at trade fair promoters P. E. Schall. “The overall concept of the trade fair plus Control Expert Days as an accompanying technical event benefits the industry with increased efficiency and utility, because the compact expert meet focuses on industry news and modern technologies: two days of business, communication and know-how transfer at the highest levels.”
QA Industry Event Combines Communication Formats as Supplement to the Trade Fair
“The main topics covered at this year’s Control Expert Days are generating a great deal of interest among manufacturers and users of QA technologies,” continues Krüger. “QA experts will discuss ‘Quality Management plus Sustainability’ on the first day of the event. This topic is highly relevant and pertinent because various quality assurance measures have a direct impact on error prevention, waste reduction, process efficiency, the conservation of resources and cost savings.” This has a direct impact on sustainable production and business practices and is thus essential for remaining competitive. Companies are currently focused on reducing waste and avoiding scrap, as well as improving workflows and manufacturing processes and complying with legal and regulatory requirements.
The second day will focus on “AI in Quality Assurance: Where do We Stand Today?” Where is AI already making a real difference in QA, and for which applications will it still take considerable time before AI can be deployed and QA is run on demand? “Amongst other things, this involves building up confidence in AI and the reliability of its results. All of this will be explored on the second day,” explains the project manager. As a highly topical and much-discussed subject, artificial intelligence is generating considerable interest for both the morning and the afternoon presentation sessions, as well as for the concluding panel discussion moderated by experts.
Control Expert Days Offer Significant Benefits for Stakeholders and Expert Visitors
The key feature of the Control Expert Days is their unique combination of the transfer of knowledge, discussions and an exhibition, emphasises Fabian Krüger: “Compactness, efficiency and high levels of technical relevance are the core characteristics of this event format as a supplement to the trade fair, which will have a direct impact on business thanks to its direct focus on practical applications.”
“Especially in these economically challenging times, this world-class, highly focused meeting of decision-makers will provide new impetus for all involved parties. It will point the way forward to future applications, trends and research,” stresses Bettina Schall, managing director of trade fair promoters P. E. Schall. “QA specialists contribute their respective expertise to this expert forum through direct communication on an equal footing. Industry knowledge and technological innovations are discussed in a professional, up-to-date and neutral manner. This benefits both suppliers and users alike,” says Bettina Schall.
The 2026 Control Expert Days will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the 20th and 21st of May, 2026. They will be held in hall 9 at the west entrance of the Stuttgart Exhibition Centre. Statement from Böhme & Weihs on the Control Expert Days 2026
Jörg von Ploetz, CEO, Böhme & Weihs Systemtechnik GmbH & Co. KG
“Control is still the world’s leading trade fair for quality today – and quality has become a decisive competitive and success factor. In industrial production, it has long been about more than just meeting standards: It is about understanding processes, using data and making knowledge available.
That is why we are not developing quality management as an isolated discipline, but as part of a networked whole. We combine quality management (CAQ), production control (MES) and energy monitoring in a central control system for the digital store floor. This makes quality an active driver for efficiency, sustainability and competitiveness.
Artificial intelligence and sustainability are part of our everyday practice. AI-supported assistance systems are already supporting root cause analysis and knowledge assurance in quality assurance. At the same time, the integration of energy, emissions and production data shows how digital manufacturing is becoming the engine of sustainable value creation.
The Control Expert Days offer the ideal framework for contributing our perspectives to the discussion and gaining new impetus from the industry: How can quality be rethought in an increasingly digital manufacturing world – networked, intelligent and practical? We are looking forward to seeing how this high-caliber format establishes itself and are delighted to be part of it.
Quality that creates the future – on a store floor that thinks for itself. Let’s talk about it!”
