Control 2022: “It’s great to exhibit again!”

The 34th Control – International Trade Fair for Quality Assurance – took place from 03. to 06 May 2022 was held with great success. After the two-year break due to the pandemic, more than 600 exhibitors finally experienced QS innovations live and up close again. Current and forward-looking developments include artificial intelligence (AI) technologies as well as production-integrated inspection processes.

Frickenhausen,10.05.2022 – 18,531 trade visitors to Control 2022 finally experienced QS advancements from the fields of vision technology, image processing, sensor technology, and measuring and testing technology again in Stuttgart – up to date, live and present. 617 exhibitors showed from 03. until May 06, 2022 on almost 23,000 square meters of space in six halls solution innovations and efficient QS top technologies. “It’s great that we can exhibit at Control again after two years of not doing so,” said Gerhard Mohr, Managing Director of Kapp Niles Metrology GmbH in Großostheim. “It’s gratifying to see that trade visitors are starting to arrive again, that attendance shows are picking up steam, and that we’re getting a little closer to the old reality.” Georg Gutsch, area sales manager at Kapp Niles reinforced this statement, adding, “Face-to-face interaction simply has many great advantages that are not even possible with online formats.”

Hubert Meintrup, Advisor New Technology at Matrix Automations GmbH in Ostfildern, also expressed his relief at finally being visible again to interested parties and users in the industry. “We’re excited to be back.” Matthias Ruf, Head of Sales at the SKZ Plastics Center in Würzburg, was equally pleased. “For us, Control was successful from the very first day of the show, with great interest from visitors,” Ruf explained. “We are happy to be able to present ourselves here as SKZ in a professional way.”

Finally live again!

At the 2022 industry highlight, 31 percent of exhibitors came from abroad; six percent of exhibitors came from Switzerland, four percent from Italy, three percent from the USA, and just over two percent of exhibitors came from the UK. Fabian Krüger, Control project manager, expressly thanked every exhibitor, including the trade fair teams, for making the Control restart a reality. Bettina Schall, Managing Director of trade fair promoter P. E. Schall, also expressed her delight and satisfaction: “This trade fair was awaited with great anticipation, with excitement, and with the best mood in advance. Because we all missed the personal exchange, the expert discussion at eye level, the real experience of the plants with all our senses. Fortunately, this is now possible again!”

Fast, precise and inline

Control is regarded as a pacesetter in quality assurance and provides trade visitors with everything they need to score points in international competition with excellent QA in manufacturing. In all the halls, it was evident throughout that there is a huge demand for personal exchanges about new developments. In the past three years since the last Control, quality verification and quality assurance have taken on new importance due to growing automation and digitization, non-contact operations and remote services, small batch sizes, zero-defect manufacturing and data analytics. Therefore, news around measuring and testing technology, materials testing, analysis equipment, vision technology, image processing, sensor technology as well as weighing and counting technology were eagerly awaited. In particular, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) processes also met with great interest. The fact that AI has long since arrived in production and significantly simplifies QA processes could be experienced in many places. Even small industrial companies can realize a simple entry into AI support, as demonstrated, for example, by Dr. Dominik Lausch from Denkweit GmbH in Halle together with Marvin Krebs from Xactools in Bönnigheim. Measurement processes must be increasingly fast, and they must be increasingly reliable. AI-supported methods support this. Current topics also include the fact that measuring, testing and inspection processes are an integral part of manufacturing operations. Instead of taking place in specially created measuring environments, testing processes are instead taking place in environments with dust and vibrations as well as under time pressure, which results in new challenges for measuring machines and testing equipment. “We are increasingly working on this,” confirmed Dr. Heike Wenzel, Managing Partner of the Wenzel Group, who was also excited to finally be back live in Stuttgart.

On an international scale, Control is the most interesting and also the largest trade fair on the subject of quality assurance. With top-class events accompanying the trade fair with the renowned research institutes of the Fraunhofer Institute, Fraunhofer Allianz Vision and Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA), as well as the special show “Non-Contact Measurement Technology”, Control is traditionally a firmly established marketplace of innovations. The next Control – International Trade Fair for Quality Assurance – will take place from 09. until May 12, 2023.

In six exhibition halls, interested trade visitors will find individual approaches to solutions and efficient QA cutting-edge technologies. Control 2022 will be the industry highlight this spring, finally bringing exhibitors and trade visitors together again in person. “Our trade fairs stand for direct practical relevance and concrete applicability”, explains trade fair promoter Bettina Schall, Managing Director of P. E. Schall GmbH & Co. KG. “Control is a pacesetter when it comes to quality assurance, and this year it will again provide our trade visitors with everything they need to score points in international competition with excellent QA in manufacturing.”

Customers and interested parties from all over the world meet at Control 2022

For the QA industry, Control is an internationally staffed and indispensable leading trade fair that is one of the most interesting and important trade fairs of all. Customers and interested parties from all over the world meet here and discuss new approaches and challenges in quality assurance in a personal exchange of expertise. After two years of pandemic-related forced pause, the need for professional exchange on new developments is huge. This is because automation and digitization, contactless processes, remote services, small batch sizes, zero-defect manufacturing, data analytics and end-to-end process traceability have given a new imperative to quality checking and quality assurance of any process – in all industries, both in the industrial sector and now in the service environment.

QA solutions have never been more significant than at present. That’s why the Control 2022 attendance fair is the place to be when it comes to measuring and testing technology, materials testing, analysis equipment, vision technology, image processing, sensor technology, and weighing and counting technology. On an international scale, Control is the most interesting and probably also the largest trade fair in these fields. Control 2022: Most interesting and probably largest trade fair in the field of measurement technology and quality assurance ready to start

“The Control trade fair has long been the most interesting and probably also the largest trade fair in the field of measurement technology and quality assurance, also on an international scale. Unfortunately, due to the given circumstances, we had to do without this platform for the exchange with our customers in the past two years. Despite all efforts via online events, there is no substitute for a face-to-face exhibition. We are therefore particularly looking forward to the trade fair in 2022.

Following the long-standing tradition, we will present our new products developed in the last two years to the professional audience. Since multisensor coordinate measuring technology and computed tomography are ideally suited for solving current problems, such as measuring 3D printed workpieces, medical implants or e-mobility components such as fuel cells, this technology will certainly play a major role at Control 2022. For visitors, there will be many ideas that will help optimize their own processes, and exhibitors will have the opportunity to make contacts.”

Control International trade fair for quality assurance csm Wirth Holger ISRA VISION HD 2864334220 uai

With AI, the integration of machine vision systems becomes easier

Machine vision is highly established and it is impossible to imagine industrial production without it, Holger Wirth, Vice President Product Management Smart Factory Automation at ISRA VISION GmbH, tells us. He emphasizes that it is very important for trade visitors to seek personal contact with manufacturers again, for example at the next Control in May 2022.

Mr. Wirth, how is the machine vision industry doing?

Basically positive. The requests from customers are there. However, delivery capability is a difficult issue due to the shortage of materials. In addition, margins are in extreme danger, as material costs are rising enormously and cannot be passed on to customers on a one-to-one basis.

What are the priority issues currently being addressed by the IBV companies?

The industry is severely impacted by the issue of material shortages. Electronic components have enormous delivery times, in some cases more than a year for camera chips. This leads to immense additional work in sourcing, but also in R&D, as some products have to be redesigned.

Industrial quality assurance (QA) is considered a crucial step in product manufacturing - especially automated as an inline inspection during production. How important is the IBV in the meantime?

IBV is highly established and an indispensable part of industrial production. Modern methods from AI now make it even easier for customers to integrate systems, especially to replace manual visual inspections.

What are the growth drivers for machine vision in the industrial environment?

Embedded systems, AI-based systems, robotics applications

What new technologies support modern machine vision?

In addition to the classically used CPUs, there is an increasing amount of hardware that perfectly supports neural networks, for example GPUs or vision processing units that are very computationally powerful but still efficient. This results in new configuration options with regard to edge computing.

Are there any barriers or specific challenges that are slowing down the development of IPM?

Finding the right lighting configuration is still an important task that requires a professional. This is where the biggest challenges arise for the end customer.

QA and IBV are all about safety, quality, reliability and zero-defect production. How far can perfection be pushed in the real manufacturing environment?

Reliabilities of 99.9 percent are already a reality today. In addition, the systems are enormously robust and generally require little maintenance beyond external cleaning.

From 03. until 06 May 2022, the 34th Control, International Trade Fair for Quality Assurance, will take place, where the topic of machine vision will play an essential part. How important do you think it is for industry participants to finally meet again in person and live, and to discuss with each other on the concrete object?

Last year’s VISION trade show showed that it is very important for trade visitors to once again seek personal contact with manufacturers. Sure, digital communication could fill the pandemic communication gap for now, but a face-to-face conversation and also “touching” a system or component is simply more intuitive. People also like to “stroll” through a trade fair and be surprised by exhibitors and innovations. A digital trade show simply can’t create that feeling.
